{"id":386,"date":"2020-12-02T01:32:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T01:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/darkskydigital.co.uk\/clients\/av\/?p=386"},"modified":"2020-12-07T01:34:01","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T01:34:01","slug":"a-publishing-minefield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darkskydigital.co.uk\/clients\/av\/guest-blog\/a-publishing-minefield\/","title":{"rendered":"A Publishing Minefield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We\u2019re deep into <a href=\"https:\/\/nanowrimo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NaNoWrMo<\/a> and if any of you are currently bashing out the draft of that novel that\u2019s been festering in your mental filing cabinet, then I wish you all the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writing part of a book is the easy part.&nbsp; It might not feel like it when you\u2019re sweating away over your keyboard and cursing your main character for not knowing what to do next!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the \u201cWhat am I going to do with it?\u201d bit that\u2019s the real challenge. The biggest challenge, however, is connecting with readers to make sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this December series of blog posts, I\u2019m going to addressing some of the key issues of book publishing, marketing and sales. I shall draw from the experiences of other writers as well as my own. Fasten your seat belt and hold on. We\u2019re in for a bumpy but thrilling ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, some facts and figures. During the Covid crisis, hundreds of titles have been flooding the already overcrowded market with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/focus\/2020\/aug\/16\/literary-world-overwhelmed-by-600-books-to-be-published-on-one-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">600 being published on one day.<\/a> The UK publishes around 200,000 books a year, and according to one piece of data, 7,500 books are uploaded to Kindle every day. There are over 6 million eBooks on Kindle to choose from! These days, people read an average of 1\u20135 books a year (I read at least one a week), so what are the chances of your book rising to the top of the pile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know of many successful authors who are having difficulty getting published even with the help of an agent. Sadly, it\u2019s a sign of the times. They cite the following reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The book is not commercial enough, i.e. it\u2019s not going to make enough money for the publisher.<\/li><li>It\u2019s not up to standard when submitted. Long gone are the days when an editor would spot a tiny diamond sparkling amongst the grit and apply the editing polish.<\/li><li>The story is not \u201ctwisty\u201d enough. My former agent rejected my Edna books because they were \u201ctame.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/barbara-pym.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barbara Pym<\/a> was rejected for the same reason but thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/books\/features\/blagger-s-guide-barbara-pym-8537403.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Philip Larkin <\/a>&nbsp;came into her own.<\/li><li>The story is too slow to start. Inciting incidents must hit the editor in the eyes with the impact of iced water.<\/li><li>The submission package was poorly put together. Too many writers don\u2019t follow the agency\/publisher\u2019s instructions <em>to the letter<\/em>. One misplaced apostrophe and the material is deleted. I\u2019m exaggerating a little here, but because agents receive hundreds of submissions a week the tiniest error acts as a filter. Agents read submissions on their phones and are very pushed for time.<\/li><li>The theme\/premise is clich\u00e9d or had been done to death \u2013 hence the reason that in early 2020 agents put out a statement that pandemic themed books would not be considered.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a lovely rejection from one agent regarding my memoir, <em>Chasing Peacocks<\/em>. It read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>Very impressed with the writing. The story tugged my heart strings\u2026 One of the best submissions of recent times\u2026. BUT I have to fall in love with a book to take it on.<br><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You can write the best book, work with the most talented editor, and rein in any wayward commas and still, you get rejected. Taking on a book is a very personal thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Publishing is a business. It <em>has<\/em> to make money. Lots of it. Agents need their 15% so they aren\u2019t going to invest any time in an author who doesn\u2019t cut the mustard. There are barriers to getting published and although I have no actual proof, I\u2019m going to lay down a few thoughts on the table for you to pick over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>I hate to say this, but age is an issue. Agents want to know they can build a long-term relationship with you. A one-off book isn\u2019t that attractive unless you are a celebrity.<\/li><li>Being part of a minority group, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/news-and-features\/news\/news-2019\/less-than-two-per-cent-of-published-authors-and-illustrators-in-the-uk-are-british-people-of-colour-says-new-booktrust-research\/\">(BAME)<\/a><\/li><li>Writers of literary fiction \u2013 genre sells, genre pays. Crime definitely pays!<\/li><li>Do you have a second book in you? (and third, fourth, fifth) and can you produce two full length novels a year?&nbsp; Second books notoriously fail to impress especially if they are not part of a series. Agents love series.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many authors who have been traditionally published are turning to independent publishers only to find they are drowning in submissions and can\u2019t take books that won\u2019t appeal to the masses no matter how well written they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there is self-publishing. Easy to do but you still need to invest some money to make sure your book is top quality. Many published authors are turning to method and calling themselves hybrid writers.
